In 2008, the PA Commonwealth changed the Borough and Township Code to say that “The Municipality shall be responsible for ensuring that fire and emergency medical services are provided for including appropriate financial and administrative assistance.” Municipalities are required by law to support their Fire Departments.
Volunteer fire companies and emergency management services across the state are noticing a marked decrease in community support while experiencing an increase in operating expenses and call volume. LMBT is facing this same trend. As a Supervisor, Sandra acknowledges the importance and responsibility of supporting the Sandt’s Eddy Fire Company, and recognizes our community is very fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers. Many individuals and businesses contribute to the Company, but most do not. Revenue from fundraising events, contributions and grants only scratches the surface of the costs for specialize equipment, operating expenses and the training needed in order for the Fire Company to maintain the high level of emergency services we have come to expect. We need to assure that the volunteers will have the resources needed to keep us and the volunteers as safe as possible.
In recent years two new fire trucks have been purchased with grants, awards and fundraising events. Sandra will continue supporting our Fire Company and is willing to begin exploring how else to assist them with meeting their financial needs.
